Pakistan’s T20 World Cup Campaign in Uncharted Territory
Spin-heavy squad in form, but India boycott casts a shadow
Pakistan’s spin-reliant team enters the T20 World Cup with strong momentum, but a government-mandated decision to skip their blockbuster clash against India could make their path to the knockout stages extremely narrow.
Government Blocks High-profile India Match
Pakistan almost withdrew from the tournament in solidarity with Bangladesh, who pulled out over security concerns in India. While the team’s participation was eventually approved, the government prohibited them from playing India in Colombo on February 15.
The forfeit leaves Pakistan without points from a crucial group game, meaning every subsequent match becomes critical.
“This isn’t a decision we made. We have to follow what our government decides,” said captain Salman Agha.
Must-win Matches to Stay in Contention
Pakistan now faces a do-or-die group stage:
Feb 10: vs Netherlands
Feb 13: vs United States
Feb 18: vs Namibia
Winning all three is essential for the team to secure a top-two finish in five-team Group A.
Confidence Rebuilt Ahead of the Tournament
After a disappointing 2024 World Cup exit following a super-over defeat to the United States, Pakistan faced scrutiny over their batting consistency, with Babar Azam’s strike rate particularly under the microscope.
Recent results, however, have boosted confidence:
2-1 series win over South Africa
Home tri-series victory
3-0 clean sweep against a weakened Australia
“We’ve had solid preparation and are ticking most boxes. We believe we can win the World Cup,” Agha said.
