Indian should be declared grave concern under the Religious Freedom Act
In an article jointly written in an American newspaper, the three leaders have said that people are aware of the situation in China, but in India, which is called the world's largest democracy, the cruel dictatorship over the religious beliefs of the people is getting worse.
This is the first time that a South Asian, especially a Pakistani American Muslim, is playing a leadership role in this very important commission of the United States.
Dr. Asif Mahmood is from the state of California and moved to the United States from the city of Kharian in Pakistan.
The American leaders wrote that since 1928, laws against religious conversion have been in force in 12 states of India, however, the authorities use these laws to illegally arrest hundreds of people and allege that religious leaders are involved in converting people to Christianity or Islam, in some cases religious riots and violence also occur.
The American leaders cited the example of the state of Goa, where the chief minister had said he wanted to enact laws to stop ‘love jihad’, while these words were based on Hindu nationalist conspiracy theories that Muslim men wanted to convert Hindu girls to Islam under the pretext of marriage.
Similarly, a Christian pastor and his wife in Uttar Pradesh were falsely accused of trying to convert Hindu neighbors to Christianity under the pretext of education and food programs.
The American leaders said that the freedom of religious minorities is being curtailed in India and innocent citizens are being harmed, and now the death penalty is being proposed for forced conversion in Madhya Pradesh.
The three American leaders said that India wants to strengthen its relationship with the United States, and by abolishing anti-conversion laws, India can prove that it is committed to a common approach.
