Indonesia Landslide Death Toll Reaches 55 as Search for 25 Missing Enters Seventh Day
ISTANBUL — The death toll from a devastating landslide in Indonesia’s West Java province has climbed to 55, as search and rescue operations entered their seventh day with 25 people still missing, state-run news agency Antara reported Friday.
Officials said two additional bodies were recovered from the disaster site, raising the confirmed number of fatalities. The National Search and Rescue Agency noted that 41 victims have been identified and returned to their families, while 75 people were rescued alive.
The landslide struck a village in West Bandung Regency on Saturday, burying dozens of homes beneath thick mud and debris. Rescue efforts continue despite challenging terrain and adverse weather conditions hampering operations.
Earlier, Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman said the government is considering converting lands damaged by the landslide in Cisarua into plantation areas to help stabilize the soil and reduce the risk of future disasters, according to the Jakarta Globe.
