Saif al-Islam Gaddafi Killed at Home in Zintan, Libya
Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, son of Libya’s late long-time ruler Muammar Gaddafi, has been killed at his home in Zintan, relatives confirmed Tuesday. Details about the circumstances remain limited.
Abdallah Othman Abdurrahim, an adviser, confirmed Saif al-Islam’s death on social media but offered no further specifics. His cousin, Hamid Kadhafi, told Libyan media that the 53-year-old “fell as a martyr.”
According to reports, four armed men stormed Saif al-Islam’s residence, disabling surveillance cameras before killing him. His location had been unknown for years prior to the attack.
Once seen as his father’s heir, Saif al-Islam had announced a bid for Libya’s presidency in 2021, though elections were indefinitely postponed. He had previously cultivated an image of moderation but became notorious during the 2011 Arab Spring uprising for promising “rivers of blood.”
After his arrest in southern Libya in November 2011, following an ICC warrant, he was sentenced to death in 2015 but later granted amnesty.
Libya expert Emadeddin Badi noted that Saif al-Islam’s death could elevate him as a martyr for parts of the population while reshaping the nation’s electoral landscape by removing a major candidate from the political equation.
Moussa Ibrahim, Muammar Gaddafi’s last spokesman, condemned the killing as treacherous, stating Saif al-Islam “wanted a united, sovereign Libya, safe for all its people.”
Libya continues to struggle with political division, split between a UN-backed government in Tripoli and an eastern administration led by Khalifa Haftar.
