Zelenskiy: US Security Guarantees Deal for Ukraine “100% Ready”
VILNIUS — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Sunday (Jan 25) that a US document outlining security guarantees for Ukraine is fully prepared, with Kyiv now awaiting confirmation of when and where it will be signed.
Speaking at a news conference during his visit to Lithuania’s capital, Zelenskiy stressed that security assurances from Washington remain Ukraine’s top priority.
“For us, security guarantees primarily mean guarantees from the United States. The document is 100 percent ready, and we are waiting for our partners to confirm the date and location for the signing,” he said.
Once signed, the agreement will be submitted for ratification by the US Congress and the Ukrainian parliament, Zelenskiy added.
His comments come after Ukrainian and Russian delegations held their first trilateral talks with US mediators in Abu Dhabi on Friday and Saturday, aimed at discussing Washington’s proposed framework to end the nearly four-year-old war. While no agreement was reached, all sides signaled willingness to continue negotiations.
A US official said further discussions are expected next Sunday in Abu Dhabi.
Zelenskiy said negotiators were reviewing a 20-point US proposal and addressing contentious issues, noting that the number of unresolved disagreements had decreased.
“At the talks in Abu Dhabi, the 20-point US plan and the most problematic issues are being discussed. There were many difficult issues before, but now there are fewer,” he said.
He reiterated that Russia is attempting to pressure Ukraine into relinquishing eastern territories it has failed to seize since launching its full-scale invasion, a position Kyiv continues to reject.
“These are two fundamentally different positions — Ukraine’s and Russia’s,” Zelenskiy said. “The Americans are trying to find a compromise. Everyone must be ready to compromise, including the United States.”
