T20 World Cup Opener: Netherlands Set 148, Pakistan Lose Early Wicket

The Netherlands put up a competitive total of 147 before being bowled out in 19.5 overs in the opening match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup at the Sinhalese Sports Club, Colombo, setting Pakistan a target of 148.

Pakistan’s chase got off to a shaky start as they lost their first wicket at 27 runs. Opener Saim Ayub, who scored 24, was dismissed by off-spinner Aryan Dutt, giving the Netherlands an early breakthrough.

For the Netherlands, captain Scott Edwards top-scored with 37, while Bas de Leede contributed 30, Michael Levitt added 24, and Colin Ackermann chipped in with 20. Aryan Dutt (13) and Zach Lion-Cachet (9) also made useful contributions down the order.

Pakistan’s bowlers shared the spoils, with Salman Mirza leading the attack by taking three wickets. Mohammad Nawaz, Saim Ayub, and Abrar Ahmed claimed two wickets each, while Shaheen Shah Afridi picked up one.

Earlier, Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha explained the decision to field first, citing favorable bowling conditions after recent rainfall. He noted the unusual amount of grass on the pitch and said the team opted for a combination featuring three fast bowlers alongside all-rounders.

Netherlands skipper Scott Edwards said his side would also have preferred to bowl first but expressed confidence due to the team’s extended preparation in India and Sri Lanka.

The match marks the beginning of both teams’ T20 World Cup campaigns. Pakistan are placed in Group A alongside India, the United States, Namibia, and the Netherlands. They will next face the United States on February 10 and Namibia on February 18, both at the same venue.
