Second U.S. Carrier Strike Group Prepares for Possible Middle East Deployment
President Donald Trump has reportedly ordered a second aircraft carrier strike group (CSG) to prepare for deployment to the Middle East, amid growing tensions with Iran. While the move would increase U.S. tactical airpower in the region, the ships would not arrive for several weeks at the earliest.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the Pentagon could issue the deployment order “within hours,” though no final decision has been made and plans remain fluid. One official indicated the USS George H.W. Bush, currently completing training off the Virginia coast, could deploy in about two weeks if ordered. Even with an expedited schedule, the strike group would likely not reach the region until mid-March, after transiting the Atlantic and potentially the Suez Canal.
A second carrier group would bolster forces already stationed in the Middle East, including the USS Abraham Lincoln strike group. Current assets include land-based F-15E Strike Eagles, A-10 Thunderbolts, E/A-18G Growlers, and the F-35A and F-35C stealth fighters. Several Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyers, submarines, and more than 30,000 U.S. troops are also in the area.
Meanwhile, a contingent of F-35A fighters from the Vermont Air National Guard continues its movement toward Jordan. These jets, along with another group in Spain, previously participated in operations targeting Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro.
The military buildup coincides with a three-hour meeting at the White House between Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Netanyahu reportedly urged Trump not to accept any agreement with Iran that would leave its nuclear and missile programs intact. Following the meeting, Trump emphasized that he still prefers a negotiated settlement but warned that military action remains a possibility.
Trump also referenced past U.S. strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, stating he hopes Tehran “will be more reasonable and responsible” this time. Analysts note that the potential deployment of a second carrier group adds additional pressure on Iran, signaling the administration’s readiness to escalate if diplomatic efforts fail.
