The attacker who died in the Bondi Beach shooting was from the Indian city of Hyderabad
Indian police say that the attacker who died in the shooting incident at Bondi Beach in Australia, Sajid Akram, was actually a resident of Hyderabad, the Indian state of Telangana, but he had limited contact with his family in India.
The death toll in the attack on Sunday has risen to 16, including one attacker.
According to the police, 50-year-old Sajid Akram was killed in police firing, while his 24-year-old son and alleged accomplice Naveed Akram is undergoing treatment in a critical condition in hospital after being shot.The Telangana state police said in a statement that the family has made it clear that they were neither aware of Sajid Akram's alleged extremist views or activities nor of the factors that led to his radicalization.
According to the Australian police, both men had traveled to the Philippines last month, where the father traveled on an Indian passport and the son on an Australian passport.
Authorities say the purpose of the trip is under investigation and it has not yet been proven that he was associated with any terrorist organization or received any training there.
The Telangana police statement further stated that Sajid Akram had visited India six times after moving to Australia in 1998, mostly for family reasons, and had no negative or criminal record before leaving India.
