Trump's massive military plan: Defense budget to increase to $1.5 trillion
Washington: US President Donald Trump has called for a 50% increase in the US defense budget to $1.5 trillion by 2027, which he described as necessary for national security in "troublesome and dangerous times".
Trump said on social media (Truth Social) that he had previously wanted a defense budget of $1 trillion, but now there is a need to increase military spending in view of global tensions and growing threats.
He claimed to build a powerful "Dream Military" with this new money, which will protect America against every enemy.
President Trump clarified that part of the additional spending will be possible from US tariff revenues, which are obtained through trade measures. The current US military budget is about $901 billion in 2026, which will increase by 50% next year.
Shares of international defense companies rose after Trump's announcement, as the president encouraged some major companies to increase investment in making more weapons and equipment. He also hinted at restrictions on the salaries and profit-sharing of top executives in the defense industry.
The proposal would require congressional approval, and some lawmakers have expressed concern that such a large budget could increase the federal deficit.
